HeatShield

The HeatShield® System

The HeatShield® System is designed to repair and restore the following issues that are common to chimney liners, often referred to as the flue:

  • Cracked flue tiles
  • Flaking flue tiles (also known as spalling)
  • Gaps between the flue tiles

These issues can potentially produce dangers in your home that you will never hear, smell or see. That means you are not likely to know about them either and that’s why leaving a damaged chimney flue unfixed is a really bad idea.

When cracks in the flue tiles are present or the flue tiles become unaligned, it allows smoke, CO2 and other debris to seep out and potentially get into your home. There is also the possibility of creosote leaking out and settling in-between the flue and the chimney walls that can potentially set up a chimney fire.

Another factor is efficiency of the unit. A fireplace is specifically designed so the smoke will be drawn up through the flue and delivered outside. If you put a hole in the side of it, it’s not going to work as well. It’s been said that it is much like trying to drink from a straw with a hole in it. You have to work really hard to get anywhere.

What Exactly Does HeatShield® Do

Straight from the CeCure website, “HeatShield® is a specially formulated “Cerfractory®” sealant material that restores the integrity of your chimney’s flue to vent hazardous flue gases from your home.” It has been used in Europe for over 20 years and has been tested here in the US and it “surpasses both National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) and International Residential Code (IRC) which require only a “Medium-Duty” refractory mortar for use in fireplaces and chimneys.”

How is HeatShield® Applied?

A sleeve is cut for your specific sized flue liner and is lowered into the flue. The material is poured into the flue from the top and the sleeve is hoisted up by a pulley system. As the sleeve moves up, it presses the material against the side of the flue, smoothing out any chips, cracks and breaks to create a smooth solid surface.
