Is That Chimney Sweep at Your Door Legit? Here’s How to Spot a Scam

Homeowners across Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, and surrounding areas are reporting an alarming increase in chimney sweep scammers. These companies advertise unbelievably low prices online, show up in unmarked vehicles, and then pressure homeowners into hundreds – sometimes thousands – of dollars in unnecessary repairs.

We’ve heard the stories firsthand. Don’t let it happen to you.

🚩 RED FLAGS: Spotting a Chimney Sweep Scam 🚩

🚩 The Price Seems Too Good to Be True: Ads offering chimney sweeps for $49, $59, or “any chimney – one flat fee” are a classic bait-and-switch. Once they’re in your home, the price balloons dramatically.

🚩 They Show Up in an Unmarked or Personal Vehicle: A legitimate chimney company arrives in a clearly branded, wrapped company vehiclenot a personal truck, unmarked van, or rented cargo vehicle. If you can’t identify who they work for before they knock, that’s a red flag.

🚩 No Uniforms or Professional Appearance: Professional technicians wear company uniforms with their name and logo. If the person at your door is in street clothes with no identifiable company branding, be cautious.

🚩 They Use High-Pressure Scare Tactics: Scammers routinely claim your chimney has dangerous cracks, carbon monoxide risks, or fire hazards – and demand immediate payment. Legitimate companies provide written inspection reports with photos so you can review findings calmly.

🚩 No Verifiable Credentials: Always ask for certification and membership verification for reputable industry organizations, like the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) or National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG).

🚩 Lack of Reviews: Always check for verifiable online reviews on Google and other reputable review sites.  Ask for testimonials if they don’t have any – if they can’t produce these, walk away.

🚩 They Use Subcontractors: Some companies take your booking and send out whoever is available – workers with no vetting, no training, and no accountability. Ask directly: “Are your technicians employees or contractors?”

🚩 No Written Estimate Before Work Begins: Any reputable company will provide a written quote before touching your chimney. Verbal agreements that suddenly change once work has started are a scammer’s playbook.
