Water and Chimneys
Perhaps the worst thing that can happen to your chimney system is a chimney leak. When water penetrates the system, either through damaged masonry or missing parts, it can destroy the system from the inside out. When it comes to chimney leaks, they’re 100 percent preventable. All it takes to prevent water damage and leaks is to schedule annual inspections and pay attention to your system—how it’s working, anything different, any discoloration or drop in efficiency. There are signs of a chimney leak long before serious damage occurs, but homeowners often overlook these small changes until it’s too late. The damage caused by water leaks is serious and mostly hidden from view.
- RUST
Rusted parts, assemblies, accessories, and glass doors are a result of prolonged water exposure. The rust will eventually lead to sticky mechanisms and eventually lock up altogether. - DETERIORATION
As water mingles with soot and creosote, a corrosive compound results in deterioration. Deteriorated metal or masonry firebox assemblies, central heating systems, masonry, and wood or wall coverings. - CLOGS
As ash, coals, and other byproducts become waterlogged, parts become clogged and the clean-out doors can become clogged and stuck. - STAINS
Red stains at the top of the chimney exterior are a result of a leak, usually caused by a loose chimney cap. White stains that look like powder on the surface of the chimney exterior are a result of water passing through porous masonry and leaving minerals on the surface. Other discoloration on the masonry such as green or black marks in and around the firebox is a result of a prolonged leak and even possibly mold growth. - COLLAPSE
The most serious result of chimney leaks may be structural. When chimney supports collapse, chimneys begin to lean, and masonry settlement begins, it is too late and can require a serious overhaul or rebuild. In order to avoid this type of serious overhaul, prevent water damage by having your chimney waterproofed.
