What it means to be and NFPA Member - Raleigh NC - Mr Smokestack Chimney ServcieAt Mr. Smokestack, we take our jobs as chimney professionals very seriously. All of our chimney technicians are certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), and we are members of professional organizations like the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG), the North Carolina Chimney Sweep Association (NCCSA), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). We would like to tell you more about the NFPA  and what being a member of this national fire safety organization means to us by telling you what this group does.

THE MISSION

Established in 1896, the NFPA is a global non-profit organization committed to the elimination of death, injury, property, and economic loss due to fire, electrical, and related hazards. Its mission clearly states: “We help save lives and reduce loss with information, knowledge, and passion.”

CODES AND STANDARDS

The NFPA has designed 300 codes and standards that establish criteria for building, processing, design, service, and installation to minimize the risk and effects of fire. With over 200 technical code- and standard-development committees comprised of over 6,000 volunteers, the NFPA votes on proposals and revisions in a process that is accredited by the American National Standards Institute.

PUBLIC EDUCATION

Devoting much of its efforts to protecting lives and property through education, the NFPA provides many resources for fire, electrical, and life-safety instructions. Included in their public education programs are Fire Prevention Week in October, Learn Not to Burn to address the leading causes of deaths and injuries among children, and activities featuring the official NFPA mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Our staff at Mr. Smokestack stays updated with the latest fire and life safety requirements, technologies, and practices with various offerings from the NFPA. We attend seminars for insight to the meaning, intent, and proper application of fire and electrical safety codes. We also attend the NFPA Conference and Expo each June to exchange ideas with our fellow members and to vote and discuss new and revised NFPA codes and standards. We utilize the vast information resource provided to us by the NFPA for fire data analysis and research to be fully informed on fire safety practices.
