Dryer Vents & Safety

House fires are more common than any of us would like to think.  We try to remember to turn off small appliances and extinguish candles, but we never stop to think that our dryers could cause this problem too.  It is important that you not only clean the easy accessible lint tray out, but also have a professional come examine the vents in the back of the dryer.  To learn more or schedule an appointment call Mr. Smokestack.

Dryer vents are extremely flammable because lint is easy to heat up and easily mixes with the heat that the dryer produces to dry the clothes.  It is important that you have enough space cleared for the technician when they arrive.  They will have to move the dryer away from the wall and remove the back vent.  Once this is done, they attach a special vacuum to the vent that leads to the outside of your home.  Then they will use a brush to scrub the inside of the vent tube.  After they reattach everything and clean up after themselves, they will be on their way.

You will know that your dryer needs attention when it begins to act differently.  One of these warning signs is when you have to run clothes in multiple cycles to get them completely dry.  However, if you do not have maintenance done before a years time, schedule an appointment.  To learn more about dryer safety tips from the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) click here.

Be ready in case of fire

In the unfortunate situation that a fire does break out in your home, have a plan ready to keep your family safe.  Make sure that the entire home is equipped with smoke detectors.  If you have multiple floors or a large floor plan, you should install multiple units.  If you want to be extra safe, check into adding some sprinklers.  Always make sure that there are two exits from each room incase one is blocked.  When you are leaving, make sure that you are as close to the ground as you can so that you do not inhale any extra smoke.  Exit as quickly as you can and meet at a designated area away from the home.  It is important to know this spot ahead of time.  Also, if you have children or people with mobility issues, it is wise to practice the plan to make sure it is doable for the whole family.
