Old Crown Coat...
The most common issue with masonry chimneys is water penetration through the existing crown coat. When you build a fire in the firebox, you have 1000 plus degrees that carries through your flue (Terra Cotta Tile). Terra cotta tile when heated can expand anything up to ¼ of an inch, there fore cracking the existing crown coat.
